How "Spuyten Duyvil" Got Its Name
Title:  How "Spuyten Duyvil" Got Its Name
Description:  The area known as Spuyten Duyvil on Metro-North's ex-NYC RR Hudson Line got its name one dark and stormy night in the 1600's. Back then, New York was a Dutch colony called Nieuw Amsterdam. According to the history books, a messenger named Antony Van Corlear vowed to swim across the channel here "in spite of the devil" to bring urgent news to settlers north of Manhattan. Despite the known danger, Van Corlear entered the swift, turbulent waters and quickly vanished beneath the waves. But his courageous vow that night echoes to the present day as the name of the nearby train station

Description:  I personally like this photo very much. Think of all the people who have looked at this clock through the decades since the so-called Golden Age of the Trains! Amtrak no longer serves GCT, and the last famous name train of the fallen flag lines left here one evening in the 1960's, but this fine, old clock is still noble, bright, and shiny. The Vanderbilt Avenue exit in the background was used in a scene in the far off future in 'Beneath The Planet Of The Apes.' Description:  The main concourse at GCT is busy with Friday afternoon commuters. Stand in the wrong place, and you're bound to feel the push and shove of big city life! The trouble is determining the right place to stand. People are flying around in all directions. This huge chamber somehow muflles all the noise. Despite all the chatter and movement, the atmosphere seemed hushed.
